Dedman School of Law Giving Priorities

Current-Use Priorities

SMU Fund for Dedman Law

Gifts to the SMU Fund for Dedman Law support the most immediate and pressing funding priorities for the school. Providing for the Corporate Counsel Externship program, judicial and public interest externships and Mustang Exchange “Flash” mentor program are just a few examples.

Scholarships

Scholarships are critical in recruiting the most talented students and reducing student loan debt. Scholarship gifts attract and support students who otherwise might not be able to attend Dedman School of Law and allow them to choose their preferred career path.

Legal Clinics

Dedman Law is committed to offering students an outstanding legal education both inside and outside the classroom. There are 10 legal clinics offering students a broad range of practical experience, where students are encouraged to choose their area of interest. Clinic options focus on particular legal areas such as civil, criminal, consumer advocacy, family law, patent law, small business and trademark.

Capital Priority

New Classroom Facility

The heart of any law school is its instructional facility. It is in the classroom that students learn to analyze difficult legal problems, advocate for their clients and commit to advancing the cause of justice. The law school’s current instructional facility, Florence Hall, was constructed in 1924, and its antiquated infrastructure and technology are unfortunately no longer serving the needs of a 21st-century law school. After a careful and collaborative review process, SMU has made the decision to move forward with a new classroom facility to replace Florence Hall. Our new classroom building creates an opportunity for us to attract and retain the best and brightest students, to deliver the very best in legal education and to provide our students with the tools they need to serve as leaders in law, business and public service. This facility will become a signature feature of SMU’s beautiful main campus and provide the law school with an instructional facility befitting one of the country’s very best law schools.

Endowment Priorities

Establishing an endowment at Dedman Law provides the opportunity to change the lives of students and scholars and to create a permanent legacy honoring or memorializing the life and work of an individual or organization.

A named fund may be established with a gift of $100,000 or more. This support allows Dedman Law to offset the rising cost of higher education by providing a dependable source of income to support students and faculty and minimizing the need for continued tuition increases. Income from the endowment enables Dedman Law to accomplish its greatest priorities, determined by the dean, such as scholarships and academic programs.

The process to establish a new endowment begins with a conversation between the donor and Dedman Law regarding the donor’s vision and wishes for the gift. Perhaps a scholarship for promising young students is a priority or a research fund in an area of personal interest. Together Dedman Law and the donor determine the greatest need and the opportunity for the gift.
